The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor is a very important sensor as it senses the load of the engine. The sensor produces a signal that is relative to the vacuum amount in the intake manifold. This information is then used by the engine computer to alter ignition timing and fuel enhancement. When the engine is functioning heavily, the throttle opens wide and so the intake vacuum drops. The engine takes in additional air, as it needs more fuel to maintain the air/fuel ratio in equilibrium.
